Liposuction
Targeted contouring for areas resistant to diet and exercise.
Being a surgical procedure, it should come as no surprise to learn that liposuction is ill-suited to people in a poor state of health, not least because of the stress involved in the process. However, liposuction can perform miracles for people who meet all of the criteria, serving to remove stubborn stores of fat that remain unresponsive to either exercise or nutrition, or which are genetically inherent.

Liposuction
Dr. Smith performs liposuction of the face and neck only. This includes the submental area under the chin, the jowls, and the lower face and neck contour generally. Patients looking for body liposuction (abdomen, thighs, arms, flanks) are not candidates at this practice and will be referred to an appropriate general plastic surgeon.
For the face and neck specifically, liposuction is one of the most reliably satisfying procedures in facial plastic surgery. A small amount of fat removed from the right places can meaningfully redefine the jawline, sharpen the neck contour, and restore a more youthful profile. The procedure is frequently performed alongside a neck lift or facelift to produce a more comprehensive improvement; it can also be performed on its own for patients whose skin still has good elasticity and whose concerns are limited to fat under the chin or along the jawline.
The consultation is where the right approach is determined. Dr. Smith will examine your anatomy, discuss your goals, and recommend liposuction alone, liposuction combined with a neck lift or facelift, or a different procedure entirely if that is the honest answer. For patients whose concerns are really about skin laxity rather than fat, a surgical lift addresses the underlying problem in a way that liposuction cannot.
Who Is a Candidate for Face and Neck Liposuction?
Good face and neck liposuction candidates typically:
- Have concerns localized to the face or neck (not the body)
- Have good skin elasticity so the skin will redrape over the treated area
- Are in good general health, non-smokers or willing to stop before and after surgery
- Have realistic expectations about what a small-volume fat reduction can achieve
Patients whose primary concern is loose or sagging skin rather than fat are usually better served by a neck lift or facelift, which addresses the underlying anatomy. Dr. Smith will tell you honestly at the consultation which procedure fits your anatomy.
